I Love To Quilt

Translate:   NONE

It's really not as hard as I thought to start quilting once you get going.  I guess it helps when someone helps you who really knows what they are doing, however, this is not always possible.  There are a lot of reasons I love quilting now.

Quilting is a wonderful, and practical, hobby.  Not only do you get a wonderful end product, an heirloom, an art d'objet, or a functional blanket to warm you, but you can have the flexibility and freedeom to be as elaborate or simple, as colorful or subtle, as traditional or modern, and as categorized or eclectic, as you want.

Something I found helpful in my new venture were websites containing themes, designs and templates.  I was able to go through and get all kinds of creative ideas by clicking on their links.  There are also a plethora of quilting magazines out there that show quilts in use in rooms for decorating ideas, and also offer suggested dimensions for specific patterns and designs.

Basic tools of the trade are essential, as well.  Those I have so far include rotary cutter with two sizes of blades, a cutting mat, sturdy plastic ruler with guide of sufficient length, an ironing board and iron, and a sewing machine.

I have learned to be prepared to plan for more than one quilt at a time so you don't get bored working on just one.  "Working on" a quilt doesn't have to mean actually sewing, it can also be simply dreaming one up.  For example, although I'm still stumped about what my son would like, I've gotten a horse print square motif underway for one of my daughters, a colorful pink one for my other daughter, and a nautical quilt for my husband and I in the more distant future.

After having done some basic quilt work of various degrees, all basically beginning level, I have not looked at fabric in the store the same way.  Now when I walk by the fabric section or into a craft store I check colors and prints of 100% cotton fabrics with quilt design schemes in mind also.  I have also come to realize that yes, the quilt fabric goes on sale, too, so not to worry if it looks like it will be too expensive immediately just because nothing is on sale at the moment.

I'm really glad I joined the quilting group in my ward.  Having help from someone, the leader, who has helped direct me and "unconfuse" me, and also who has given me ideas, I can really say I love to quilt, and am really excited about the projects I'm working on.
